Role of Children
Would you rather be a girl or a boy in the Roman Empire? As soon as a child was born it was laid at its fathers feet.If he raised the child into his arms then he was acknowledging the child as his own. If the child was excepted then it received all the rights and privileges of membership in a Roman family. If the child was not excepted then the child was an outcast, without family or protection. Then the child was taken by a slave and left by the roadside. Until the age of seven boys and girls were taught by there mothers to learn to speak Latin correctly and do elementary reading, writing, and arithmetic. Once the kids were seven boys went to regular teachers and girls got taught by there moms how to sew, weave, and spin. Then after schooling the boy was taught by his father to follow in his footsteps. The father then taught his son how to use weapons in the military, as well as riding, swimming, wrestling, and boxing. When a boy was gaining his main hood there was a ceremony marking this stage in the boys life. Girls never got this ceremony. Boys had a lot more privileges than girls did while growing up in the Roman Empire.
